Photo of the Month – October 2019

The photo of the month for October 2019 is one of my favourite subjects – a bird.

Birds are the thing that I have photographed the most. They are fascinating to me. Their variety of colour, shape, size, personality, and behavior never stops amazing me.

Location of this Month’s Photo

I didn’t have to go too far from home to get this shot. I took it at the southern end of Sandy Beach in New South Wales, Australia.

I had been out on the beach filming for a YouTube video. While in the car park, packing my things back into the car, I heard a familiar squawk in the tree above me. I instantly recognized it as a Black Cockatoo.

Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoos have been elusive for me. They usually sit high in the trees where the zoom length of my lens couldn’t reach. To have a few of them only meters up in the trees above me was fantastic!

I got quite a few decent photos on the day, however the one above is my favourite.

Where To Find Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoos

As you can see in the map below, the Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo is found in south-eastern Australia.

However, they are also found in other places, for instance, in Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland.

They are one of five species of Black Cockatoos in Australia:

  • the Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo
  • the Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo
  • the Glossy Black Cockatoo
  • Carnaby’s Cockatoo
  • Baudin’s Black Cockatoo
